“Anya”, “Fennec” and “Forty-Four Fennecs” – The Origins of My Names

I’m not gonna talk about my legal name, but rather my internet handle Anya.Fennec (cause it’s more interesting). I hated my old name and wanted a female one, but never really had one that I liked.

“Anya”

Anya Alstreim, the Knight of Six

When the K.O.R group of friends started forming, one of the glues that held us together and gave us something to talk/obsess about together was Code Geass (care to guess what the acronym stands for?). Seeing as how we each had different favorite characters, we (mostly me, but the others sometimes joined for fun) started assigning a character to each of us (and other people that we managed to make addicted to CG) – obviously I was Anya Alstreim, the Knight of Six. Why? Because I say I can ruthlessly blow up a flying battle cruiser without giving a rat’s ass about the crew like she does with her Stark Hadron Cannon. As a continuation of that joke, I would refer to myself and have others refer to me as Anya (and I use it for my internet stuff too). After a while, the name stuck and I would react to that name as if it really was my own. There was no way in hell I would use my original name when I came to college (I hated it AND it doesn’t translate well into English), so I decided to use the name Anya and now everyone calls me that. Yay me =D

“Fennec”

Fennec

In the K.O.R group, we had a swimmer that liked to refer to herself as Fish/Fishie/Fisharkie (and I think there was a FishNinja or something added after she joined her college’s swim team  o_O). We also had a guy (Yes, a guy) named Kitti (in Thai it’s a male name, but since we went to an international school people just call him “Kitty”) who then became the Cat. The other girl (there was 4 in total by the end) was occasionally teased as LinLin, which sounded like the stupid panda some stupid zoo imported from China and people went batshit insane over so we called her Panda. That left me without an animal name. Prior to that, I read about Mozilla‘s mobile version of Firefox, codenamed Fennec. The name just sounded so unique and cute I loved it before I even knew what a Fennec is ^^” so I used that as my animal name (and also the name of the main character of Radiance, Fen for short). Panda was opposed to it at first (“You’re not cute enough to be a fennec!”), but the others didn’t really care so I got the name. I’m named after a mobile browser, but still the name’s cool. Yay me again =D

Throwing another pic in for Kyaaaaaaa-ness

“Forty-Four Fennecs”

So… what about this blog’s name? I originally had a stupid sounding blog name, because it was just for force-feeding Radiance to my friends. When I decided to expand the blog, I needed a new name. I decided to use “Fennec” as part of it, and wanted a word that started with F in front and sounds catchy. It was probably because I was reading about Facebook‘s launch of Places that morning, with Foursquare being mentioned a lot, that led me to “Forty-Four”. And I like it :3
